I've taken some well timed advice from a friend whom I think didn't realize she was giving me advice (nor do I think she realized she really helped me deal with part of being a statistic). Focus on the good things no matter how small. So I carry a small notebook and a pen with me everywhere. As I'm not much of a purse carrying woman, they reside in Alex's diaper bag, which is better than a purse anyway. My list for today:

1. The shootings in Maryland, while tragic and frightfully close to my family up there, completely 100% did not affect them in any way. One shooting was near my closest and dearest and longest friend's workplace, but she wasn't at work that day. None happened near their house, though a little too close for my comfort (and their's I'm sure). I haven't gotten through to them on the phone yet, but I will soon I'm sure. I'm still glad to know they are all okay.

2. Hurricane Lili completely passed over us. They evacuated Galveston (and my friend who goes to uni there) Wednesday morning, and were even thinking of evacuating Houston for awhile when Lili was a Level 4 Hurricane, but never did evacuate us. We got to stay put. And Lili missed all of Texas except Beaumont and surrounding areas, and they only got rain. I do feel bad for the poor people in Louisianna, but they got off rather lucky, as Lili dropped to a Level 2 before it made landfall instead of reaching it's predicted Level 5 status over the Gulf. Not only did Lili completely miss us, but we've had clear blue skies all week, not a sign of rain. Go us!

3. My dear friend and first love (and a few other first things which I won't post here) will be in town week after next. He's in the Navy and stationed in Washington (state) right now and I haven't seen him in almost three years. I miss him terribly and it will be great to see him again. He'll get to meet Alex. He's excited and so am I.

4. I'm exhausted, but it was a mostly okay week and I don't have to get up at 5 am tomorrow. :) I can sleep in until 7 am when Alex wakes me up. :) I'm very very very happy about this.

5. I just may be able to afford my Hogwarts uniform yet. I can make the tie for free. I can make a wand for free. I can get the sweater for very cheap and I can get trousers at Goodwill for only $4 (whereas the skirt, while having the exact one I need, was a size 16... I'm a size 6... no way I could make that work). I already have the shoes and shirt. I have a scarf on the way for free (gotta love sisters who can knit). I may be getting the robes as an early winter holiday present (Christmas for my parents, unknown as yet for me since I'm somewhat "between religions" right now... I'll explain if anyone would like to know... you just have to ask. I'm not a mind reader, after all).

6. Ren Faire starts tomorrow! I may only be able to go once this year as I can't afford the tickets, but my mother promised me one weekend to take me, and I bet my dear friend B might help out on the ticket once if I drive her all the way up there. I can't wait! I love Ren Faire. It's my lifeblood and all I really look forward to in the October/November months.

7. I'm going to make Alex's very first ever Halloween costume, and it's going to be great. She's gonna be so cute! I'll post pictures somewhere.

That's all for now. I'll post more tomorrow, or I'll try to anyway. Focus on the good things, focus on the good things... it's my new mantra. I feel better already.
