Jul. 26th, 2005 07:26 amLet's add one more complication to the laundry list of complications I've already had this pregnancy, and in life in general right now! Sure, why not. It'll be fun. Won't it?
So right before the blessed new canon (in fact, Friday, the day of even) I had my standard 28 week Gestational Diabetes (hereafter refered to as GD) test. No biggie. Drink made me sick, but at least not until after they got the blood drawn.
I find out the following Wednesday, after all the wonderful ORXmooters had departed the Evil ORX Lair, that I failed and needed to take the 3 hour long GD test the following day. No big deal, again.
I also found out I'm severely anemic. Are we surprised? Not really. My diet is crap and I become anemic easily. This happened last pregnancy too. Iron pills to the rescue, though they give me bad heartburn (what doesn't these days?) and are rather large and hard to swallow.
I go in Thursday morning for the 3 hour GD test, after having fasted for 12 hours, and get my fasting blood drawn. I'm then handed a double concentrate of the same drink that made me sick after the 1 hour test. Same amount to drink, double the concentrate of sugar! At least it was cold. One hour later (did I mention the drink must be CHUGGED? You've got 5 minutes to finish it, max, or the test is screwed up), I get blood drawn again, all while fighting to not pass out thanks to the huge mega-rush of sugar on a system deprived of food. One hour after that, more blood drawn. One hour after that, the last vial is drawn. I'm feeling much better now. So I eat. Yay for food! Finally!
My arms STILL have bruises from being poked twice in each arm... mind that's just the pokes to actually GET the blood. My veins are crap. They like to pretend to jump to the surface but then decide to RUN AWAY as soon as a needle is inserted in my skin. So they bury back down and hide, often rolling one way or another away from the needle. This results in multiple pokes (though bless her, by the 3rd time she figured out how to catch my viens on the first go, so the last two times I only got poked once each) until finally a vein is snagged and the blood drawn. This poor woman does blood draw for a living (not a nurse, she works IN the lab and her job is to draw the blood only), day in and day out, 8 or 9 hours a day, 5 days a week. She was not new to this by any means. And she said I had some of the worst veins she's ever seen in that lab, and apparently she's been working there for years. Go me and my complications!
Yesterday I call the doctor for my results, as I was told Monday would have my answer. The nurse calls me back about half an hour later.
It's still high. Damn it!
Say hello the newest member of the GD club. I'm now on a special (costly) diet. No sugar, at all, not even natural sugar in fruit! The only fruit I'm allowed at the moment is half a banana two or three times a week IF I can eat it with something low fat/high protein, and that's mostly because I need the potassium and fiber a banana will give me. *sobs* No fruit! My mother has vowed, however, to make my first meal home from the hospital a big fruit salad with all my favourites. Mmm. I love my mother. I'm to eat lots of vegetables. Lots of them. As many as I can. Vegetables at every meal, if I can manage it, she said. LOTS of protein. Low starch, low fat, and low carbohydrates. 3 meals a day at the same time every single day. One morning snack, one afternoon snack, and one big snack before bed. Every day. Same time every day.
I'm getting a blood sugar monitoring kit. I get to poke myself first thing in the morning for a fasting blood sugar, and then 2 hours after every meal. Every day. We're hoping the diet can control it and get my sugar down, otherwise I get to go on insulin injections.
Can we tell just how much fun QueenRiley will be having over the next 2 and 1/2 months? Loads.
Just one more complication to add to the list, one more reason why I'm incredibly glad this is our LAST BABY EVER.
