Mar. 24th, 2003 04:30 pmI have a few things to say.
Firstly, Canadians: Is there anything bad about living in Canada? Everything I see, hear, and read about Canada is good. People I know who used to live there and had to move to the US counted down the days until they could move back. I'd really like to find something bad about Canada, because if I can find one thing bad about it, I can rationalize why I haven't moved there yet. :)
Most importantly, to the British: I would like to apologize on behalf of my country. I would like to apologize for the stupidity of our inhabitants, who continue to bash the British even though you are offering more support in this stupid war than any other country. I would like to apologize for the stupidity of the US soldiers who can't seem to recognize an ALLY helicopter and felt the need to shoot it to the ground. I would like to apologize for you being dragged into this war mess by our President.
To the Germans: Thank you for taking a stand for what you believe in. Thank you for saying this war is wrong.
To the French: Thank you for being the true allies we always thought you were (even if half of America laughed at you behind your backs, they were just stupid). You showed what a true friend is. Instead of supporting a friend country in doing something stupid, you stepped forward and told it like it is. You came out and said "Hey, now. Just take a step back and think about this for a minute. It's just not right." So thanks for having the courage to say that, even if most of the US doesn't have the brains to realize how right you are.
To the Australians: I'm sorry you also got dragged in this mess. I'm sorry you lost people in this war too. And I'm sorry that the American press counts your losses, just as the British losses, as "acceptable casualties" and won't report on it, other than a brief mention in the long list of mentions of US marines downed.
To the Icelanders: I cannot apologize enough for the way my country is acting. We've bullyed you into thinking you need to support us. We've bullyed you into thinking that, without the protection of the superpower that is the US, you will fall to the evils of Saddam, even though he hasn't targeted you and probably doesn't even know where Iceland is.
To the Russians: I'm sorry my leader feels it is his right to command you to do something. I'm sorry my leader believes he rules the world. He doesn't. I'm sorry my leader is of the mind that it is his place to control the actions of other countries. I'm sorry he is now being rude to you because you did something he didn't like.
To all the protestors across the world: Stand tall. Stand proud. Stand up for what you believe in. Don't let anybody tell you that you are wrong for not agreeing with this war. Don't let them take away your freedom of speech, because whether the pro-war people will admit it or not, freedom of speech goes both ways... if they are free to say what they want, so are you. Thank you for doing things that I don't have the courage to do.
To Michael Moore: Your documentary was astonishing. It was moving. It was truthful without fear. Thank you. As for your speech at the Oscars... I'm not sure that was exactly the place to say it, but good for you for actually having the courage to say what others won't.
To President Bush: What he said.
To the innocent Iraqi citizens: I'm sorry we are doing this to you. I'm sorry we are destroying your lives for one person's cause. I'm sorry we are killing you, tearing apart your families, shattering your lives, demolishing your cities, and trashing your lands. I'm so very deeply sorry.
To all the pro-war people: You have a right to say what you believe. I am not attacking you for believing it. I actually give you props for saying what you believe whether you are in the majority or minority. Please give me the same respect I have shown you.
To all my friends: Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone. I'm surrounded by war supporters in my real life. Thank you for giving me an outlet with like-minded intelligent people. Thank you for not making me feel stupid. Thank you for not telling me I'm wrong without listening to me. Thank you for listening to me. Thank you for believing my sources without looking at them and then saying "Well, they're wrong." Thank you for everything.
To the citizens of the United States: You are being lied to. You are being fed just as much propoganda as the Iraqi people are being fed. Your news is glorified and biased. Please look to news sources outside of the US and try to pick out from all sources what is the base truth. If you don't want to do that, then at least acknowledge that you are not recieving the whole truth, or even half of the truth. You are recieving a portion of the truth, played up to make the US look wonderful, humane, and free of all criminal acts or "unacceptable" behaviour.
I've just one more thing to say:
I have educated myself about this war. I read the articles. I watch the news. I seek out the history of Iraq and it's people, as well as information on the first Gulf War. I am educated. I still feel that this war is not the best course of action at the moment, and I still think Bush is handling things horribly wrong. But I do support our troops. I will applaud them when they come home. And I will cry for every person I know that leaves this country to go to Iraq, and I know a few. I will cry for every one of them that dies, or that loses a friend, a brother, a sister, a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, a husband, or a wife. And I will cry for every Iraqi citizen who dies or loses a friend, a brother, a sister, a mother, a father, a daughter, a son, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, a husband, or a wife because they were innocents caught in the crossfire, innocents caught in a bombed residential building, innocents trying to go about their daily lives. I will cry for the children killed because their school was bombed accidently while they were trying to learn. I will cry for the men and women lost because their Mosque was leveled while they were praying to Alah that this war would end soon so they could be with their loved ones, so they could have a better life. I will cry for every child who is emotionally shattered by watching this happen to their homeland, to their families, to their friend's families. And I don't think I'm wrong just because I don't want people to die.
