My apartment complex is burning right now. It's a large complex with many buildings. We are incredibly lucky that it's NOT our building. They seem to have it under control now and are not evacuating the neighboring buildings, but the fire was pretty bad. The second story is demolished and I wouldn't be surprised if the first floor is in just as bad condition. Smoke is still billowing out of the second floor back window, which we've all managed to deduce as the origin of the fire. Still... that's at least two apartments, probably more like 4 or all 8, that are gone... destroyed... all possessions, everything burned up. I don't know how badly anybody was hurt, but two EMS units pulled away pretty fast. It's just very scary to have a building in my complex burn like that. A friend of ours lives at the other end of the complex (like I said, it's a big complex) and saw the smoke. He came over to make sure Alex and I were okay, since all he could tell was that there was a lot of smoke and sirens coming from our direction and he knows Jeff is at work, so it's just the two of us. I was standing outside watching and trying to figure out if everything was under control or if I needed to grab Alex and some clothes when he came up. It's okay though. The fire hasn't spread beyond that building and doesn't look like it's going to. The fire department has it well under control now. Police have both ends of the street blocked off. Nobody gets in or out unless it's a fire truck, a police car, or an EMS unit. Still... it's pretty scary stuff. You don't want to hear sirens and step out your door and be greeted with flashing lights and a wall of billowing black, menacing smoke rising to the sky to strangle what little light the stars give as you look out across the parking lot. It's rather unsettling, though I know we aren't in any danger now.
