I've found a local British shop! As in, foods and goods imported from the UK! And it's local! The couple that runs it even invites locals over for afternoon tea, should we be picking up an order at about that time. :D

Only problem? They don't sell Jaffa Cakes. I have to have those shipped still. They do have HobNobs though, and Heinz Baked Beans, and Cadbury Drinking Chocolate and Dairy Milk, and Mars bars, and I really do eat things other than sweets, I promise. I just need to convince them that I'm not the only person in the entire US that would eat Jaffa Cakes.

Being Human

So I've just gotten into Being Human. I saw an episode while staying at my parents' house last week (thank you digital cable and BBCAmerica) and thought it was intriguing. I've found it online now that I'm home and have watched the pilot and the first two episodes. I really quite like it, and plan to watch the rest, but wanted to know what any of you might have thought about it, if you've watched it, thoughts on the cast change from pilot to first episode, etc?

I only turned it on that night because I saw it had Russell Tovey in it and he absolutely blew me away in The History Boys. If I see anything with one of those boys in it, I feel the need to watch it no matter what it's about. So now I'm wondering if it's actually a good show or if I just like it because, well, it's Russell Tovey (and I can't not appreciate a show that lets me see his naked ass at least once an episode...mmmmmrusselltovey)!

So let's have a discussion, if anybody else has watched it!

I've recently finished book 5 in the Percy Jackson stories. I know it's been out for awhile but I only just got to it in my reading list.

I was rather surprised by the ending. It's not at all what I expected and I quite liked it. A fitting end for a good little series.

Quite bad at this journaling thing. I'd rather forgotten this was here. I've stickied it now. I shouldn't be neglecting it again, I hope. Not that I really have avid readers here in the first place, but it's my one connection to a friend I greatly miss (which is how I remembered I had it in the first place, I was reminiscing) so I shall endeavor to be more attentive to this account.

So... what haven't I updated one? Um...

I loved Star Trek. Very good reboot. Can't wait for DVD.

I haven't seen HBP yet but hope to soon. I'm greatly looking forward to it.

I still don't have a job but would like one very very much. Nobody is hiring.

My car died and now I have a new-to-me vehicle. I've named him Rhys. He's lovely.

Can't think of much else at the moment.

Comment to this entry and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. You must then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Glee Squee

Did anybody else watch the premiere of the new Fox show Glee last night?

I did. I think I'm in LOVE. It was part reality of the way high school was and part the way I always dreamed high school could be (mostly because I, personally, can't sing). Only in my high school, the rejects and weirdos didn't join Glee club or Drama club... we moved to a different school (Quest, the high school for the weird intellectual rejects where everybody was welcome).

If I could make a dreamy-look-floating-hearts face with text, I would put one here. Because I'm enamoured with Glee. Please tell me I'm not the only one?

What does one do with an hour to spare, limited resources, no money for a grocery run, and a husband who wants a birthday cake?

Why this of course! )

Made entirely by hand from scratch. All of it. And it was awesome.

So. Star Trek tomorrow! :D

So so so sad. I just can't believe it. I was not expecting this one. *sob*

OMG.

OMG OMG OMG.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!!

I... just... GAH! Fantastic season finale. Will be absolutely teh suck if they don't renew for a third season. It would go down like Quantum Leap. But the episode? OMG!!!!!!!!!!

OMG.

That is all.
chuck
Why does Chuck deserve a third season? Well I could go into detail about how intelligent the show is, how witty and it's uncanny ability to span multiple genres and do it well. But that's not the point of this post today.

Today is me asking for your help, whether you watch the show or not. Today (Monday, at 8pm eastern) is the season two finale. If it's in your budget and power today, please go to Subway and purchase a $5 footlong sandwich of your choice. Leave a comment card (most locations have them) letting them know you're participating in the Finale and a Footlong Campaign to get Chuck a third season. Show Subway their sponsorship is worth it and show NBC that people love this show. You could also send a note via the Subway website letting them know you appreciate their sponsorship. Then go to NBC.com and let them know you participated (or wanted to even if you couldn't) in the Finale and a Footlong Campaign and you want a third season for Chuck. I know it's asking a lot, especially if you never watched the show, but seriously... this show is WORTH it. If you haven't watched it, and it is in a very competitive time slot (Mondays at 8pm eastern), take some time to watch the first few episodes.

What else can I say? Well how about this? The lead actor of the show, Zachary Levi, was at a convention in Birmingham (UK) yesterday. He took over 200 convention attendees down the street to a local Subway, got them sandwiches, and then went behind the counter to help the employees make ALL 200+ sandwiches. He was there from the first sandwich to the last. I mean, seriously, how AWESOME is that?

Nearly every actor in the show has taken time to post a thank you to their fans, a thanks in all our hard effort to get a third season. This is such a humble and gracious cast. They deserve another year of work.
chuck
Two things:

Number 1- What is this Dreamwidth thing everybody keeps running over to join? Is there a particular reason for the mass exodus off livejournal? *is hopeless and confused*

Number 2- Does anybody else watch Chuck? Surely I'm not the only one that adores this show! If you watch it, let's talk about it. If you don't watch it, give it a try! Instead of downloading, watch a few episodes on nbc.com as they monitor the views (or borrow from Netflix or Blockbuster since season 1 is on DVD).

It's such an intelligent show. It has comedy, drama, romance, action and adventure. It has geek references and mainstream jokes. It's comedy is witty and it doesn't pull the preschool level humour just to get a laugh. Seriously, you guys should be watching this show. It's just a really good show.

Chuck is on the bubble. It deserves a third season, but NBC is still in debate on whether to give it that third season. It's in the coveted and highly competitive 8pm est Monday time slot. Please, give the show a chance and if you like what you see, write a letter or tell a friend. Every little bit helps. Save Chuck

Like all of you, I'm angry about the current underhanded shenanigans from Amazon. I want to know what happened and why. I want to pull my support for them. I'm sure you all know what's going on, but I'll link anyway: copperbadge talks about it and meta writer has a post and it's all over the blogosphere. Amazon fails.

Have a comprehensive list of books with ranks pulled for your anger inducing perusing.

And in my anger I'll contribute to this: Amazon Rank Amazon Rank Amazon Rank Amazon Rank and for good measure, here, have a Amazon Rank.

That being said, I want to give Amazon the benefit of the doubt. Mind, how they've handled this is still really shitty and I'm still really angry. But I know a standard customer service script when I hear one, and the replies given since February for the adult content material IS standard customer service script material. They can't actually look into a problem, they don't have time and aren't allowed. Trying to actually help a person can get you fired. Call centers suck. For one possible theory, which I'm not sure how much I believe in the first place (but I'm kind of desperately flailing for some sort of explanation, no matter how out there it is), here's this theory.

Even if this does turn out to be some massive underground effort by some homophobic WHACAKALOONS, it does not excuse anything Amazon has done. I'm still angry. I'm still likely to pull my support. I just want to know why they allowed this and how they could respond so poorly.
chuck
This? Which is also talked about here? Is awesome. :D

Chag sameach, all celebrating with me this week!

We'll start with The Good because, well, The Good is just THAT good.

Iowa. Iowa legalizes same sex marriage. Iowa. IOWA! Go Iowa! I want to squish it in a big hug and snuggle it. The Supreme Court heard the case and determined the prior language defining marriage between one man and one woman was unconstitutional. They voted to abolish the defining language and make same sex marriage legal. The vote was UNANIMOUS. Aw, IOWA!!!!!!!

And The Bad. So ANGRY right now. Time Warner Cable, just about the only viable internet provider in the Greensboro area (it has long had a monopoly in this city), has decided to make us a "test city" to try out their new idea of tiered internet. What does that mean? That means that you buy a plan for how much internet you will use each month and when you exceed that, you have to pay an overage fee. The caps are RIDICULOUS. Seriously. The highest you can go is 40GB per month, and that's going to cost us $55 per month before their fees and taxes. Just streaming one online movie takes up, on average, 8GB. I do most of my tv watching online! We're not sure what we're going to do, but we will NOT be keeping our Time Warner internet service. There aren't a lot of other options though. Comcast serves some of Greensboro, but not all. Earthlink MIGHT come to our area, but at this point in time does not service the specific apartments I live in. AT&T isn't any better.

Big Broadband Users: Get Ready to Pay More

Time Warner is also doing this in Austin and San Antonio, Texas as well as Rochester, NY.

Hey, lookie! The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) has finally updated their recommendations! They finally got on board the extended rear-facing bandwagon and are recommending you keep your kids rear-facing in the car until the age of 2. Good for them. Now if we could get those pesky outdated state laws changed...

Keep Your Toddler in a Rear-facing Carseat Until Age 2 (Not 1)

Also, on a totally different subject entirely... is anybody else watching Law & Order UK? I've gotten my greedy little hands on the first six episodes and I have to say, I'm impressed! I thought it was just my bias showing through (both Freema Agyeman of Doctor Who fame and Jamie Bamber of Battlestar Galactica fame are main characters) but I've gotten a non-Whovian and non-BSG fan hooked on it too. It's just that good a show. :D

Yes, another meme. Done this one before but it's always fun.

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Ugh... have been quite ill. Like, crawl in a cave, curl up, and wish for death ill. But I'm doing somewhat better now. Sort of. Recovery sucks, but not as much as the actual being ill. Needless to say, sorry for my silence for the past, oh, week. :P

I hobble my way back to the land of the living with a meme!

1. Comment and I will give you 3 people. If you comment, let me know if you want to do the meme and I will give you three people for fandoms I have some idea you are interested in (if I know the characters; please give me some idea of your fandoms if you're not sure I know what you're into). edit-my own addendum... specify if you want MALE or FEMALE characters. We'll just assume gay marriage is legal, mkay? If you don't specify, you'll get a set for both, so there ha.

2. Post this meme with your answers in your own journal.

3. Provide pictures and the names of the three people.

4. Label which you would marry, shag, or cliff.

What the crap was that???? That was 2 hours and 11 minutes that was wasted. Okay, the first hour was AWESOME. Then it went downhill. Then it went to insane land. Then it went to WHAT THE FRAK ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT land. It ended with "I wasted four years of a television show for THIS?" and I'm fuming.

What a waste. What a craptacular ending. So so so disappointed.
